These colorful little flowers can be seen growing wild in subtropical regions, or purposefully grown in gardens. Their colors generally range in basic red and blue, purple and orange categories. However, some of the more home grown types can range in dramatic dark and pastel hues. The purple flower may be seen to sprout as a single flower or in large groups, and although they are generally considered a herbaceous plant, they may also be seen sprouting from shrubs or trees. These medium to large-sized blooms are fairly recognizable, with a dark, distinctive whorl of stamens at their centers, which are surrounded by four to six papery, brightly colored petals.
The poppy flower is most commonly associated with both death and sleep. These two themes have come about over time both because of the poppy’s anesthetic properties, and because it is said that poppies were given as offerings to the dead by the Greco-Romans. This symbolism has appeared in a variety of art forms. For example, the magical poppy fields of the Wizard of Oz, which caused those who passed through them to sleep for eternity. Poppies also appeared in Lieutenant Colonel John Mcrae’s poem “In Flanders Fields,” and were occasionally worn as a sign of respect to fallen soldiers. In legends, the poppy flower was often connected to the gods of sleep, rest and oblivion. In Christian churches during the medieval era, poppies were occasionally carved into benches to represent our restful nature as we anticipate the Last Day. In more modern times, people like to use poppy seeds for their spicy flavor which can be baked into breads, cakes and pastries. Some forms of the poppy are still occasionally used for medicinal purposes. The California poppy, for instance, is sometimes used as an antimicrobial cleanser for cuts and scrapes, suppressing lactation, and as a pain reliever for tooth aches. Although, the California poppy is considered less potent than the red poppy (which was once used to create opium), it is still frowned upon to use in any medicinal concoction.
Although the poppy flower may commonly be used to represent death and eternal rest, it is also thought to bring many good things. For instance, mystics feel that poppies can be talismans for good luck in love, money and health, and recommend placing a small sachet of petals beneath your pillow. Because these flowers can be both lucky and respectful, they make fantastic gifts for someone who is in transition in their life. Either dried and placed in a bag, or freshly clipped and given as a bouquet, these flowers can bring nothing but good to the recipient.
From the beginning of November until April, flocks of the Purple Finch, consisting of from six to twenty individuals, are seen throughout the whole of Louisiana and the adjoining States. They fly compactly, with an undulating motion, similar to that of the Common Greenfinch of Europe. They alight all at once, and after a moment of rest, and as if frightened, all take to wing again, make a circuit of no great extent, and return to the tree from which they had thus started, or settle upon one near it. Immediately after this, every individual is seen making its way toward the extremities of the branches, husking the buds with great tact, and eating their internal portion. In doing this, they hang like so many Titmice, or stretch out their necks to reach the buds below. Although they are quite friendly among themselves during their flight, or while sitting without looking after food, yet, when they are feeding, the moment one goes near another, it is strenuously warned to keep off by certain unequivocal marks of displeasure, such as the erection of the feathers of the head and the opening of the mouth. Should this intimation be disregarded, the stronger or more daring of the two drives off the other to a different part of the tree. They feed in this manner principally in the morning, and afterwards retire to the interior of the woods. Towards sunset they reappear, fly about the skirts of the fields and along the woods, until, having made choice of a tree, they alight, and, as soon as each bird has chosen a situation, stand still, look about them, plume themselves, and make short sallies after flies and other insects, but without interfering with each other. They frequently utter a single rather mellow clink, and are seen occupied in this manner until near sunset, when they again fly off to the interior of the forest. I one night surprised a party of them roosting in a small holly tree, as I happened to be brushing by it. In their consternation they suddenly started all together, and in the same direction, when, not knowing what birds they were, I shot at them and brought down two.
The clematis are in purple colour and is a large genus of flowing flower that contains about 300 species and is a member of the ranunculaceae family. Clematis plants are woody, climbing shrubs and herbaceous perennials with delicate stems, and divided leafstalks and leaflets which allow the plant to become anchored to nearly any structure. These plants are best known for their elegant blossoms. These flowers can grow from a tiny 1 inch to 10 inches in circumference. The lightly-scented heads may form in singles, doubles or both, and can – depending on their environment – drastically change in color throughout their lifespan.
Some of the earliest records of clematis plants can date back as far as 1569, when new species such as C. viticella were introduced into Britain. Despite this fact, the public did not take a genuine interest in these plants until sometime during the 1850s. During this period of time, botanists began hybridizing clematis plants – creating stronger, more attractive breeds such as the Jackman clematis and the gipsy queen clematis. Unfortunately, after years of breeding, hybridizers ran out of ideas for new combinations, and the interest in these plants began to fade. Thankfully, though, this lull in plant breeding seems to have weeded out the weaker species, and today – with the interest in clematis back in full swing – we find that many varieties are hardy and relatively free of disease. With the resurgence of interest in clematis plants, it is not surprising that flower enthusiasts around the world are coming together to show their passion. One great example of this is the American Clematis Society, which has been active for over a decade, and is committed to spreading the vast knowledge of all of its members. The British Clematis Society holds a similar ideal, but rather than simply spreading literature on the plant, this group holds large public events to help broaden awareness.
Clematis was once considered an emblem of deception; today, however, these plants are considered a symbol for cleverness and beautiful brilliance. As a gift, these climbing shrubs are frequently given as a compliment to the recipient – a sweet way to tell them that they are not only stunning, but also absolutely ingenious. These plants are also an emblem for the 8th year of marriage, and make for lovely anniversary gifts. Because they contain essential oils that may be irritating to the skin, they are almost never presented in the form of a bouquet; however, potted varieties are just as stunning, and will last a good deal longer.
